  • Top Three Teams Qualify for 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil in Fall 2008

  • CHICAGO (April 23, 2008) - Earlier this week the U.S. National Futsal Team was drawn into Group B of the 2008 CONCACAF Futsal Championship along with Costa Rica, Panama and Haiti. The tournament will take place June 3-8 at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The top three teams will represent CONCACAF at the 2008 FIFA Fustal World Cup in Brazil from Sept. 30 until Oct. 19.

In 2004, the United States won the CONCACAF Futsal Championship tournament by compiling a 3-0-2 record that included a 4-0 semifinal victory over host Costa Rica. As a result, the team, lead by head coach Keith Tozer, earned an automatic berth to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Chinese Taipei where they advanced to the second round. The United States also won the inaugural CONCACAF Championship in 1996.

The U.S. National Futsal Team finished in the top three at the first two FIFA Futsal World Cups in 1989 and 1992, and the team's second place finish in Hong Kong in 1992 is its best ever result.

The 2008 CONCACAF Futsal Championship marks the first time in 12 years that the event has returned to Guatemala, after the last two editions were held in Costa Rica. In addition to the U.S. and its opponents in Group B, Cuba, Mexico, and Trinidad & Tobago join hosts Guatemala in the other half of the draw (Group A).
